Meet the Creators

Kayra and Caroline are graduates from the University of Southern California with Master’s Degrees in Occupational Therapy and have over 30 years of experience working with children in the school and clinic settings.

As pediatric occupational therapists we were frequently asked by teachers, parents and other professionals how they could help kids increase fine motor skills to improve handwriting. In response, we developed a summer Hi-5 Handwriting Camp to support our local families and schools.  A main focus of the camp was for the campers to personalize a fine motor kit which also educated the campers and parents on how to use it once the camp was over.  The kit not only included the materials, it also provided a simple explanation of how to use each material and the core foundational skills that each activity addressed. 

Little did we know that this fine motor kit would be such a “big hit”!! In fact…our campers could not wait to come back the next day so they could use and learn about it!  We knew we were on to something big when our campers chose to come to Hi-5 Handwriting Camp instead of going to “Sea Otter Camp” and an “Amusement Park Camp” (TRUE STORY)! As a result, parents, teachers, and other therapists began hearing about the kit and asking how they could get one for their own use. 

Here's How Our Adventure Continued...

As clinicians, we found that we were constantly faced with challenges of buying, organizing and carrying an abundance of materials and spending countless hours prepping for activities.  We were constantly printing one-time use worksheets which only addressed one fine motor skill area.  As we worked with our students, it became apparent that many kids had unrealistic expectations of themselves when comparing their work to commonly found computer generated worksheets.

Here’s the Result of Our Adventure!

We responded to the continued requests for fine motor kits from the summer Hi-5 Handwriting Camp and the ongoing challenges that we faced as pediatric occupational therapists.  We carefully crafted and combined all of our inspirations, challenges and solutions that we learned along the way resulting in the formation of our company, Kids Therapy Adventures.  This led to the creation of our first product, Hi-5 Kids Fine Motor Adventure Kit which includes adventurous stories, original illustrations and creative use of materials intended to support our parents, teachers, occupational therapists and new therapists entering into the field.  We designed an innovative way to encourage kids to engage in meaningful fine motor play activities while at the same time, educating and explaining to others the reason behind “Why We Do, What We Do”.

This is What Our Adventure Includes...

Hi-5 Kids (H5K for short) Fine Motor Adventure Kit is packaged in a comprehensive, Grab-n-Go format so that everything is all in one place! 

The H5K Fine Motor Adventure Kit includes 50 original, hand-drawn illustrations and themes to inspire kids in a playful way.  For each illustration, there is an adventure story to guide the child through a unique experience that can be easily adapted to the child’s level of ability. 

To ensure that the H5K Adventure Fine Motor Kit is comprehensive, we incorporated developmental guidelines, definitions of terms, and an easy-to-use data collection form to monitor progress.  Each adventure has built-in movement breaks to promote sustained attention, challenges to increase the level of difficulty, and suggestions for proper seating and alternative positioning.  Since we are passionate about educating others about what we do, we built-in an educational tool to include “Target Skills” that identify the foundational skills for fine motor development.  All materials in this kit are re-usable to reduce waste.   The H5K Fine Motor Adventure Kit is designed to be user-friendly for all disciplines, parents, teachers and therapists.
